Posted September 09, 2018 03:25:11 The first half of the 2018/19 season was a complete wash, and the second half of it was a whole lot worse.
The first half was the same as the first half the previous season, with no new additions to the squad.
The second half saw a number of departures with the likes of Sergio Perez, Pablo Sanchez, Juan Arango and Pablo Osvaldo all departing the squad for clubs in Europe.
The last squad change was also made, with the departure of former goalkeeper Luis Perez.
There were no surprises at the start of the season, the likes, the most obvious one being Diego Costa, who arrived from Atletico Madrid on a free transfer.
However, he struggled to establish himself as the focal point of the side and was rarely able to find the net, even though he was playing at the highest level of football in the world.
In the second period of the campaign, Costa started to find his feet and his first goal came against Atletico in the Champions League.
However, Costa was not the only player to struggle to score.
Lazio’s Mario Balotelli was a revelation for the Giallorossi, scoring twice and also providing some good assists.
Alberto Aquilani also found the net and made his Serie A debut, scoring the only goal in the second leg of the Europa League against Juventus.
The Brazilian striker is a young striker who has been linked with many European clubs, and his performances in the Europa and Champions League will be a major factor in the title race for the season.
Another newcomer, Andres Iniesta, came into the team after he had left Sevilla for Manchester City, and he proved to be a vital cog in the Atlético Madrid attack.
On the other side of the ball, Gonzalo Higuaín, who had been loaned out to Sporting Lisbon, scored three goals in three games for the Portuguese side.
Finally, the return of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was forced to miss the first two games of the year due to a knee injury, was an exciting start to the campaign.
Iniesta scored five goals in the first six matches and his brace in the derby win over Atalanta earned him a place in the team.
However, things began to unravel after a few weeks.
Ronaldo missed the final two matches of the Liga, including the Copa del Rey final, which is usually a huge boost for his team.
With the loss of him, Atlética lost their two most important players, Diego Godín and Alvaro Negredo, both of whom had a hugely important role in the squad’s progress.
Both players were sold to new clubs in January, with Negredo heading for Real Madrid and Godín joining Lazio.
It was a tough time for the team, especially considering that they were still in the final of the Copal del Rey and the Europa Leagues.
However it was important to remember that there were still a number players on the pitch who could help them in their quest to qualify for the Champions league.
The most important of those players was Alvaros Pineda, who has scored six goals in eight league matches.
Atletico Madrid are currently in third place in La Liga with a record of 11-5-2.
